Recommended Climbing Team for Rinjani Nationality: Singaporean Summary We got in contact with Ken via Facebook and made a booking for a 4D3N climb from Sembalun to Senaru. This route start off from Sembalun after registration at the office and climb to the Sembalun Crater Rim on day 1 where we pit stopped. We woke up at 2am in the morning to climb to the summit (which took us about 4 hrs). The schedule thereafter is pretty much dependent on your condition. It was a heart pumping climb down to the lake (2000m) where we pit stopped and enjoyed the hot spring. On the last night, we pit stopped at POS 1 of the Senaru trail instead of the crater rim as we were heading to Gili on the day of return. We were allocated with 1 guide (Mayot) and 2 porters (Sayat and Adi). Overall rating = 5 Stars. I would highly recommend taking up Ken Team as the climbing team for your Mt Rinjani in view of their professionalism and style of travel provided. The food and equipments provided were decent and comparable to that of any other climb teams [we did our survey in the mountains :) ]. I also did mine survey on the market price of the guided tour, it is really the most reasonable priced and best of all is that all tours are private tours (you can enjoy yourself better that way, trust me, you will). Booking, First Night Accommodation, Pickup and Return Trip The booking may be slightly troublesome as you will have to contact Ken via their Facebook chat; unlike making booking via a booking system like most of the other climbing teams. But no worries, these hassles can be outweighed by the good service provided by Ken who tend to response very quickly on FB, and is exceptionally patience in explaining all the details for the tour. You will have to make a deposit via paypal or bank transfer to secure your booking and all is ready to go. The airport transfer is provided from Lombok International Airport to your first night accommodation either in Sembalun or Senaru. The airport transfer is timely and reliable I would say! Ken Climber team will be there to pick you up personally, be rest assured they will be there. I have heard from a few other travellers and Ken himself that they will wait till even 3am (more than 8 hours) to pick up their clients. The journey to the accommodation in Senaru is approximately 3hr drive from the new Airport in Praya. As we arrived in the evening around 5.20pm, Ken brought us to a restaurant for dinner enroute to Senaru; great recommendation and cozy restaurant. First night accommodation is included in the package and we were situated at Pondok Senaru, which has an amazing view of Mt Rinjani and also a water fall which is about 10min walk away. The end trip transport service is also in the package. After arriving Senaru on the last day of our trek, we were ferried to our accommodation and was thereafter brought to the port at Bangsal to continue our trip to Gili Islands. Apart from the booking process, all else in my opinion is top notch service in terms of accommodation and transport! Briefing Upon arriving at the accommodation, Ken briefed us on the entire journey and what to expect during the journey. If you have any doubts just clear it with him at this moment and all else is good to go. The Guides & Porters Our guides and porters were introduced to us on the next day after our arrival after. Most of the guides and porters in Ken Climber Team is made up of Ken's family members and are really really nice young folks! Our guide was 23 year old, Mayot, whom I must say a very very dedicated, friendly and reliable man; do to request to have him take your team for the climb when making booking. To me safety is of utmost importance and the companionship of the guide at all times for the climb is priority; given that they know the route and conditions of the mountains better. Mayot was really professional in executing his role as a guide; he guided us throughout the climb (bringing us on the slightly less risky routes) and ensured that we do not over exert ourselves as that would mean trouble if you get injured on the mountains. His encouragement for us to keep pushing on was also timely and without excessive pressure. With pretty fluent level of conversational english, we were able to connect with him very well and he was great friend to us by the end the trip. We did taught him how to use Singlish, so it is not hard for you to spot him on the mountains or know that it is Mayot when he speak to you. His favourite phrase as of now: "OK LAH?" As for the porters, I think we can't say anything more but to salute them. They climb with merely a slipper and 35-50kg of weight balance with a bamboo pole on their shoulders. Can you imagine the risk they take climbing down the steep rocks? And they do that almost day in and out. Do note that most of the guides were also porters in the past, so do not belittle your guides! All I can say is all porters are BAGUS! Our porters were always on time, and they set up our tent and bonfire very efficiently. We will be keeping in touch with all our guides and porters! Look forward to seeing youn all again when we visit lombok! The Route (Level of Difficulty: 8/10) What we love about the entire trail is how natural it is; all you can expect is natural terrain and with minimal amount of metal bars that prevents erosion. It is highly recommended to take up a 4D2N tour from Sembalun to Senaru; for easier pace and greater perseverance to summit (as you does so on day 2 at approx. 2am). You will tend to enjoy better when you climb down to the lake area (with hot spring). But for those with weak heart or fear of height, you may just want to take up a 2D1N Sembalun to summit and back down to Sembalun. The route from Sembalun crater rim to the lake is a very steep down and rocky route. Just to get a gauge of the level of toughness to climb Rinjani; we shall share our own experience and also the thoughts from some of the avid trekkers/climbers we met along the way. Summitting Rinjani was really tough given the loose gravels that pave the route all the way to the top on the 45 degree elevated slopes. It really put your physical and mental endurance to the test. Literally for most people even myself whom I would consider fit (i.e. running 42km marathon in sub 5hr), the mind over body aspect will kick in the moment you are 1/2 up the summit. For every step that you take, you can slide down by 2 to 3 steps. You will definitely need good trekking poles and constant perseverance to get you up to the summit. Also, we have met a few expert trekkers/climbers who had previously done many mountains trekking including Kinabalu, Anapurna Base Camp (ABC) and Everest Base Camp (EBC) climbs, recounting that the climb up Rinjani summit was the toughest they had ever came across. So yap, summitting will give you a enormous amount of pride and achievement. Try it to find out :) Final Words We sincerely thank all of you from Ken Climber Team for your guidance and support for our Rinjani climb. Thank you for your professionalism and dedication! We will hope to stay in contact and even revisit again for another round of climb :) You guys and the place left such great memories for us. Love you all and stay safe my friends! "SLOW IS GOOD!" Cheers! Regards, Berwin

THE BEST RINJANI CLIMBING GUIDES I can safely say that climbing Mt. Rinjani is one of the highlights of my trip around Indonesia. My thanks goes out to Ken Climbing Team because without them, my summit to the top would not have been successful. I did the 2D1N trek, which was a little daunting as this was my first time trekking a mountain. But, my inexperience didn't matter because Ken, my guide Lendry, and our two porters made sure that my journey was safe, warm, and unforgettable. Ken met me at a comfortable hotel the night before the climb. He explained the routes and the schedule, as well as what I would expect from the volcano. The next morning I began my trek up from the town of Senaru. The hike itself up to the base camp was about 8 hrs up. The route can be a bit steep at times, but it is completely feasible, especially if you're a novice like me. However, as a word of advice, pack as lightly as possible. My pack was a bit too heavy for me to carry, but Lendry saved the day. He was an extremely attentive guide and noticed that I was struggling with my pack. He helped me unload it and carried up my extra weight with no problem at all. He matched his pace with mine to make sure that I wasn't falling behind and gave me the encouragement and motivation that I needed to make it up to the base camp. Lendry's english was great and so it was awesome conversing with him and sharing some good laughs as we hiked up. By the time that we made it to the base camp, the tent was set up by the quick and strong porters (they proceeded up the mountain before us). The tent protected me from the heavy wind at night while the sleeping bag kept me sufficiently warm. As we settled down for the evening the porters made phenomenal food. Lendry made sure that I was well fed and served warm drinks, and we continued good conversation as the sun went down. The sunset on the mountain was beautiful, but once the stars came out the sky was absolutely stunning. There were so many stars along the skyline that I could see the milky way! Incredible experience! After a couple hours of sleep, Lendry woke me up around 2 am to begin our ascent of the summit. Honestly, the summit is challenging. But, it is purely a mental challenge, and with Lendry's help I was able to summit right as the sun was rising. The sun, sky, clouds all looked amazing from the top and made for a really beautiful sunrise. You can see almost all of Lombok from the top of the volcano, as well as Mt. Agung in Bali and parts of Flores. It was really a rewarding experience after making the trek up. Lendry and the team were so essential for my success, and I am so thankful that I had them to assist me during my trek. I highly recommend Ken Climber Team for their dedication to making sure that I had an enjoyable and safe experience. Please, do not attempt to summit this without the help of a guide and porter. Ken Climber Team is a fantastic choice to begin your journey up Mt. Rinjani. Best of luck!
